Straight Guys Who Like Dick

Dan Savage's recent writings on straight guy cocksucking culture (let's call it SGCC!) are real oxygen in a culture where many supposedly educated, worldly, and even liberal minded people are eager to cram people into prefab cultural niches. Remember in the 1980s we thought all those guys in the basement of the pornostore were gay? Some may have identified as gay, many probably did not.

One of the defining features of SGCC is that it is fugitive. It thrives of being secret and anonymous. And to one extent, one must understand that it is a sexual ghetto. In the major cities of Europe, men can choose between gay and straight red light districts. Since men are willing to do it for free, "gloryholes" are the last remaining American red-light district.

Imagine life without ever having cruised a RLD. Never having the thrill of the first time, the first good-time, the first disappointment, and the realization that it's not always a black or white experience and American sex-negative mores where a lie. Many European working girls are independent and very happy especially once they realize you are not an asshole. Imagine being a SWAM who never made that trip to Europe, could never afford American prices, and finding that rush for the first time in the porno-booths.

In his piece on Washington State Senator Richard Curtis, Dan Savage nails down Curtis' kink for cross-dressing and taking it like a bitch. He's more sympathetic to the ex-senator than his trick that sold him out. It's all qualified appropriately, but Dan is right - most cross dressers aren't gay. I don't really "get it" myself in a "Dude, you've got a mustache!" kind of way, but I do understand how people can "be into their own heads" sometimes especially when they are trying to get off. So don't label the guy closeted gay man who needs to embrace gay culture. That's not who Richard Curtis and a lot of other guys into SGCC are.
